Options When an Emergency Expense Will Not Wait

We connect people with lenders, so you might expect this page to tell you to borrow. Some of the options below are cheaper than borrowing, and a few are free. Work down the list in order.

1. Call whoever you owe, first

This is the step people skip, and it is the one most likely to work. Medical providers, utilities, landlords, auto shops, and municipal services very often have payment plans, hardship programs, or hospital financial assistance that are never advertised. You have to ask.

Moving a due date or splitting a bill into three payments costs nothing and adds no interest. No loan can beat that, which is why this belongs at the top of the list rather than buried at the bottom.

2. Check local assistance before you borrow

Dialing 211 connects you with local programs for utilities, rent, food, and prescriptions. It is free, confidential, and available in most of the country.

If the emergency is a power or heating bill, LIHEAP exists specifically for that, and many people who qualify never apply.

3. A credit union Payday Alternative Loan

If you can join a federal credit union, this is usually the cheapest borrowing on the list. PALs are governed by NCUA rules rather than left to the lender.

Rollovers are prohibited, you can hold only one PAL at a time, and no more than three in any rolling six-month period. Rules per NCUA.

4. Then, if you still need to borrow

Sometimes the expense is genuinely unavoidable and the options above are exhausted or unavailable. That is a real situation and a loan can be a reasonable tool for it. The test is simple: before you accept anything, you should be able to say out loud what the total repayment amount is and when each payment is due.

If you cannot answer those two questions, you are not ready to sign. Compare on:

  • APR, the only figure that compares two different loans honestly.
  • Total repayment across the whole term, not the monthly payment.
  • The schedule against your pay dates, not against the calendar.
  • Late and returned payment fees, which is where an emergency becomes a spiral.

One thing to be skeptical of

Be wary of anyone guaranteeing approval or a specific arrival time for funds. Approval depends on information the lender has not reviewed yet, and timing depends on payment rails and two separate banks. Our guide to how loan money actually moves explains why a transfer sent today may not land today.

ASAP Loan is not a lender and does not guarantee approval, funding, rates, terms, or timing. This page is general information, not financial advice. Program rules and availability change, so confirm details with the program or a qualified advisor.

Common questions

What should I do first when I cannot cover an emergency expense?

Call whoever you owe before you borrow. Medical providers, utilities, landlords, and municipal services routinely have payment plans or hardship programs that are not advertised. Rearranging a due date costs nothing and does not add interest, which no loan can match.

What is a Payday Alternative Loan?

A PAL is a small loan offered by federal credit unions under NCUA rules. The interest rate is capped at 28% and the application fee is limited to actual processing costs up to $20. PAL I is $200 to $1,000 over one to six months. PAL II goes up to $2,000 over one to twelve months. Rollovers are prohibited, and a borrower can have only one PAL outstanding at a time.

Is a loan ever the right answer for an emergency?

Sometimes. If the expense is genuinely unavoidable, the alternatives are exhausted or unavailable, and you can see the full repayment schedule fitting your budget, a loan can be a reasonable tool. The test is whether you can state the total repayment amount and the due dates before you accept.

How do I compare emergency borrowing options?

Compare the APR, the total repayment amount across the full term, the payment schedule against your pay dates, and the fees for late or returned payments. A lower monthly payment stretched over a longer term often costs more overall.
